What is an Implant?

A dental implant is an artificial substitute or replacement for the root portion of your natural tooth and is anchored into your jawbone to support a crown or bridge.  Implants are made are made from titanium, a material that is well tolerated by bone and which integrates easily with bone tissue.  Replacing a missing or damaged tooth with an implant is completed as follows:

  • Implant Fixtureimplants fixture

This is the first stage in an implant procedure and involves the surgical placement of the titanium implant into your jawbone.  Once the implant is placed into the jawbone and healing starts to take place your natural bone will grow around the implant locking it firmly into your jawbone

  • Implant Crownimplant crown

An implant crown is the final stage in the process, it is the part of the implant that is visible in your mouth. Once we are satisfied that full healing has taken place after the implant fixture has been placed and the implant has integrated with the surrounding bone, an impression will be taken and sent to the lab. The technicians will use this impression to fabricate a custom made crown which fits on top of your implant. You then return for your final visit during which we permanently cement the crown into your mouth.
